#20 Red Hellion

1. When and how did you get started in derby?
I started derby when I was 26, now I’m 31 In between I had some non-skating periods, due to work. I learned about Go-Go Gent from a friend and teammate, Aagje, who was posting all kind of cool stuff on wheels. A week later I joined in.

2. What’s been your favourite derby moment?
I liked the first derby, I call it the “old school derby” . We didn’t know too much in those times, so we were always siked about every little thing. 🙂 First time track queens I also loved. I think I enjoy every bout, on or off the track.

3. Who are your derby heroes?
Hmmm…. all my teammates?! Especially the single moms with kids, a fulltime job, who try to be there at every training, they deserve a huge respect, I think.

4. How did you pick your derby name?
“Hellion” is from Marvel comics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellions) It’s a group of characters, some with telekinetic powers, from X-Men. Red comes from my hair colour.

5. What’s your worst injury?
My ligaments of my left foot. And my right knee is not what it’s used to be, it is weaker and there is a soft spot. Due to those ‘old school’ derby, when we were falling a lot… so that’s the other side of the medallion . Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that roller derby is changed into a safer sport, but I still liked those times.

6. What advice would you give to someone who would like to play derby?
Never lose the fun, if you lose the fun, then in time you lose your skills.

7. If I wasn’t playing derby, I’d be…
A fat mother.

8. One word to describe GO-GO Gent:
Natural anti-depressant!
